Superb trio awarded to 2/746 2/Lt Launcelot Russell GUBBINS N.F.E.F. Born in Peru raised in the UK before embarking on career abroad, volunteered Sep 1914 under a false name whilst working in Pacific Islands. April 1915 he landed in Gallipoli, W.I.A Achi Baba sent to Malta but returned until the evacuation, sent to France rising through the ranks. K.I.A near Mount Scherpenerg the following recorded “During a temporary lull the O.C ordered a rest, everyone was done up, and there was hardly sufficient gunners to man the guns and a battery of hostile heavies was playing on the battery position, whilst taking cover, the look out reported the infantry S.O.S rocket and without a moments hesitation Lance called out, “come on boys, they’re looking to us for help”, sending a few gunners with him to one gun, he, and Subaltern, a Sgt and a Corporal made an impromptu crew and manned another. AH.E shell killed both officers and wounded the Sgt mortally. He was 36.
