The Signals unit originated as a communications troop in 1949 and was redesignated Federation Signals Squadron and then Federation Brigade Signals Squadron around 1952, in the run‑up to Malayan independence in 1957.
The same basic sea‑tern and crown design carried forward into the later Royal Signals Regiment crest, but the wording on the circlet and scroll eventually changed to Malay (“Rejimen Semboyan Diraja” and “Pantas dan Pasti”).
These bi‑metal collars, with English motto and British‑style construction, fit well into this early Federation of Malay Signals era, i.e. mid‑1950s to early 1960s, just post‑independence but before full Malay‑language insignia was standardised.

The design is explicitly Signals, using the “Swift and Sure” motto inherited from the British Royal Corps of Signals and also seen in other Commonwealth signals corps.
As a matching facing pair with two copper lugs each, they are officer‑quality bi‑metal collar badges rather than cap badges, worn on service dress or No. 1/No. 2 dress by Federation of Malay Signals officers.
