Badge Craftsmanship.

This exquisite silver collar badge from 1927 exemplifies the pinnacle of British military silversmithing, crafted for the 2nd Punjab Regiment of the British Indian Army. Hallmarked in Birmingham with the date letter for 1927, its solid silver construction—evident from the reverse stamp J.R.GAUNT & SONS. showcases intricate detailing: a dynamic galley ship facing right (as per collar badge convention), complete with billowing sail, oar banks, dragon prow, and elaborate rigging that captures fluid motion.
Badge Craftsmanship
Birmingham’s assay mark guarantees purity for officer wear, making it a wearable artifact of Edwardian-era precision. At around 4cm tall, its weight and depth reflect premium materials used for elite regiments.
Regimental Symbolism
The galley emblem, unique among infantry units worldwide, honors the regiment’s 19th-century “readiness always evinced” for overseas service despite cultural taboos in India. Adopted in 1922 upon the regiment’s formation from historic Madras battalions (raised 1761–1798), it embodies the motto “Sthal Wa Jal” (By Land and Sea). Collar badges faced right to pair symmetrically on uniforms, distinguishing them from left-facing cap badges.
