British Army brassard (armband) from the Multinational Division Central (MND(C)).
The shield-shaped dark green badge bears the NATO star and the flags of Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Great Britain, above a representation of a helicopter and the letters “MND.” The Union Flag patch above it identifies the wearer as British.
MND(C) was one of the first NATO forces formed for rapid deployment across all types of operations, commanded by the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC). It was set up in April 1992 and fully operational by April 1994.
It consisted of four airmobile/airborne brigades: the UK’s 24 Airmobile Brigade, the German 31st Luftlandebrigade, the Belgian Para-Commando Brigade, and the Dutch 11th Luchtmobiele Brigade. The badge was approved by the Army Dress Committee in January 1994 and worn on the left arm of the combat smock or on a brassard.
The division’s headquarters was at JHQ Rheindahlen, near Mönchengladbach in Germany, and it remained active until its disbandment parade in October 2002.
The helicopter symbol on the badge reflects the division’s specifically airmobile role – rapid insertion by air rather than ground advance. A nice piece of post-Cold War NATO history.
