Overview
A beautifully preserved, authentic piece of early 20th-century American military history. This 20mm brass uniform button features the iconic, historically significant 1851-regulation strike utilized by naval officers from the Civil War era through the onset of the Second World War. Showing an incredible gold-gilt luster and minimal wear, this field-worn button due to the steel uniform fixer.
Design Details
- Obverse (Front): Features a crisp, high-relief design of the American eagle perched atop a fouled horizontal anchor, surrounded by a laurel wreath and a raised rope border against a finely lined background. The eagle's head faces left (from the viewer's right), confirming its pre-1941 manufacture.
- Reverse (Back): Stamped with the authentic, period-correct generic military contract backmark "SUPREME QUALITY". The lettering is deeply incised into a solid, smooth brass backplate.
- Hardware: Retains its original, fully functional brass loop shank paired with a steel cotter-pin/toggle attachment.
Uniform Application
At exactly 20mm in diameter, this size was strictly reserved for an officer's uniform cuffs, pockets, or waistcoat. The presence of the removable cotter-pin toggle indicates this button was explicitly configured for the Navy's Washable White Service Uniforms worn in hot climates like Texas. The toggle allowed buttons to be easily detached prior to laundering, preventing heavy steam iron damage and chemical brass tarnish on white summer fabrics.
