The 2nd Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was formed in 1881 following the Childers Reforms, when the former 81st (Loyal Lincoln Volunteers) Regiment of Foot became the battalion’s new identity. Throughout Queen Victoria’s reign the 2nd Loyals earned a strong reputation as a disciplined and dependable infantry battalion serving across the British Empire.

During the Victorian period the 2nd Battalion spent many years on long overseas deployments, particularly in India, where it garrisoned key stations such as Ambala, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar. Duties included frontier security, training, and supporting wider British operations across the subcontinent. In the late 1890s the battalion returned to the UK before deploying again to southern Africa at the outbreak of the Second Boer War in 1899.

In South Africa the 2nd Loyals took part in several major actions, including Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, Tugela Heights, and the final operations leading to the Relief of Ladysmith. The battalion continued serving in the Transvaal and Orange Free State in 1900–1901, still on campaign at the time of Queen Victoria’s death. These hard-fought operations earned the regiment significant respect for its resilience and professionalism.
