The 14th/20th King’s Hussars served as a key armoured regiment in the British Army’s Royal Armoured Corps during World War II. Formed in 1922 from the merger of the 14th King’s Hussars and 20th Hussars, it mechanized with light tanks in 1938 while based in India.
Service Locations 1940-1945
After early war postings in India, the regiment deployed to Iraq and Persia (modern Iran) in mid-1941 for combat against pro-Axis forces. It remained in the Middle East—guarding oil fields and supply routes to Russia—for about three years, transitioning from light tanks to Sherman tanks. In late 1944, it moved to Italy, fighting until war’s end in 1945.
The regiment countered German influences in Iraq and Iran as the main tank element of the 2nd Light Armoured Brigade, securing strategic areas amid harsh conditions like 120°F heat. In Italy, it supported the advance on Bologna, using Kangaroo APCs alongside Gurkhas to capture fortified Medicina after intense house-to-house fighting, then battled at the Gaiana Canal and advanced to Padua.
