WW2 16th Punjab Regiment (1922-47) 25mm brass button Made by STILLWELL
The 16th Punjab Regiment (affectionately known as "Solah Punjab") fought across multiple grueling theaters of World War II, earning major battle honors in North Africa and the Far East under the British Indian Army.
The regiment was composed of a mix of regular and war-raised battalions, which saw vastly different deployments:
- The Malayan Campaign (3rd Battalion): Formed from the historical 33rd Punjabis, the 3rd Battalion saw fierce combat in Malaya and subsequently became prisoners of war following the surrender of Singapore.
- The North African Campaign (4th Battalion): Raised from the 9th Bhopal Infantry, the 4th Battalion saw distinguished action in North Africa, fighting extensively in the Western Desert and participating directly in operations like Wadi Akarit in Tunisia.
- Reorganization and Anti-Tank Roles: In July 1942, a Machine Gun Battalion for the regiment was raised in Sialkot, which was later converted into the 16th Punjab Anti-Tank Regiment, Indian Artillery.
Historically, like all battalions within the regiment, these units were comprised of a highly decorated mix of Sikh, Dogra, and Punjabi Muslim companies.
