84 Squadron sheet metal stamped squadron badge with coloured highlights , centre of badge has a scorpion with the motto “Scorpiones pungunt” (“Scorpions sting”).
Also in the same box that this lapel badge was found was a simple strip of leather with what appears to be a surname BRIE written on it and a pilot officers tropical rank badge.
Key WWII achievements
- First wartime combat (15 Aug 1940): while ferrying Blenheims from Iraq towards Aden, they intercepted and shot down an Italian SM.81 near Kamaran Island.
- Western Desert and Greece (1940–41): operated Blenheims from Egypt, then moved to Greece, bombing and striking targets including ports/airfields in Italian-occupied Albania, before evacuating as Germany invaded.
- Iraq and the relief of Habbaniya (May 1941): supported British forces during the Anglo-Iraqi conflict, then hit Axis reinforcements moving via Vichy-held Syrian airfields.
- Syria/Lebanon and Iran (1941): took part in operations against Vichy French airfields and later the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran (Aug 1941).
- Far East disaster + famous escape (1942): deployed to Sumatra/Java with Blenheims and suffered catastrophic losses when the bomber base at Kalijati was overrun. A small party escaped Java by lifeboat and, after 47 days at sea, reached north-west Australia – naming the boat “Scorpion” after the squadron badge.
- SEAC ground-attack (1944): reformed and operated Vultee Vengeance dive bombers in India/Assam, supporting Chindit operations and striking Japanese forces during the Imphal/Kohima battles; they flew their last Vengeance bombing raid in July 1944 as the type was withdrawn.
