A superb original WW2-period cap badge of the 8th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment, the reconnaissance arm of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division during the Second World War, commonly known as 8 Recce or VIII Recce.
The badge takes the form of a brass “VIII / RECCE” two-tier scroll mounted on a white metal maple leaf, the brass standing out crisply against the white metal ground for the bold, attractive appearance typical of Canadian regimental badges of the period.
The bi-metal construction is original to the period. This bi-metal variant is generally understood to have been issued at demobilisation at the end of the war, with the all-white-metal badge being the type most commonly worn during active service. This remains a genuine wartime-era piece and a legitimate original, not a reproduction.
The regiment was formed at Guillemont Barracks, near Aldershot in southern England, on 11th March 1941, by merging three existing reconnaissance squadrons within the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. The badge design was created by the regiment’s first commanding officer, Lt.-Col. C. Churchill Mann.
A scarce and desirable badge from a well-regarded Canadian wartime regiment.
Condition: Mint. A superb example, with three rear sweat holes.
