When WWII broke out, Newfoundland was a dominion governed directly by the United Kingdom via the Commission of Government — so the British declaration of war automatically brought Newfoundland into a state of war with Germany. Newfoundland wasn’t yet part of Canada (that didn’t happen until 1949), which makes this title unusual — they represent a separate nation’s military identity, not a Canadian or British regiment.
The overseas artillery connection
Rather than sending a full regiment overseas as in WWI, the Commission of Government directed volunteers into British and Allied forces. Two Royal Artillery regiments were specifically named for Newfoundland — the 166th (Newfoundland) Field Regiment, which served in Britain, North Africa and Italy, and the 59th (Newfoundland) Heavy Regiment, which fought in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Soldiers in these units would also have worn “NEWFOUNDLAND” titles.
