WWI Canadian Expeditionary Force 141st (Rainy River District) Battalion “Border Bull Moose” Cap Badge. With 2 flat stamped rear lugs.
The 141st (Rainy River District) Battalion, CEF, was authorised on 22 December 1915 under G.O. 151, with mobilisation headquarters at Fort Frances, Ontario, recruiting through the Rainy River District of northern Ontario on the Canadian-US border, hence the unofficial regimental title “Border Bull Moose.” Under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel D. C. McKenzie, the battalion embarked for England on 29 April 1917 with a strength of 17 officers and 466 other ranks. On arrival its personnel were absorbed into the 18th Reserve Battalion on 7 May 1917 to provide reinforcement drafts to Canadian Corps units already in the field. The battalion was formally disbanded on 17 July 1917, though its honours were retained: in 1929 it was awarded the theatre of war honour “The Great War, 1917.” Its perpetuation passed first to the Rainy River and Kenora Regiment (1920), then to the Lake Superior Regiment (1921), today’s Lake Superior Scottish Regiment.
