1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards (QDG) is an active armoured cavalry regiment in the Royal Armoured Corps of the British Army , nicknamed The Welsh Cavalry, recruiting from Wales and the bordering English counties . It was formed in 1959 by amalgamating the 1st King’s Dragoon Guards and The Queen’s Bays (2nd Dragoon Guards) , both raised in 1685, making it, despite its “young” 1959 formation date, the most senior regiment of the line in the British Army . Its current Colonel-in-Chief is Catherine, Princess of Wales , and it has served in Iraq and Afghanistan  in recent decades, including the final British combat deployment to Helmand Province in 2014 .
