The 2nd/11th (County Armagh) Battalion existed for only about a year (1991 to 1992) and no longer exists. Named to CWJ BROWN.
Potted history
- The parent regiment. The UDR was mostly part-time local soldiers serving in Northern Ireland from 1970 to 1992. Their duties were patrols, guarding key sites, surveillance and vehicle checkpoints.
- 2 UDR (County Armagh), 1970 to 1991. Because it patrolled South Armagh, known as "bandit country", it was one of the most heavily engaged UDR battalions and had the longest list of casualties.
- 11 UDR (Craigavon), 1972 to 1991. It took over companies in Lurgan, Portadown and Tandragee that had been part of 2 UDR.
- The merger. The two merged on 30 September 1991 to form the 2nd/11th, based at Mahon Road Barracks, Portadown, while keeping companies at Drumadd Barracks, Armagh.
- The colours were presented to the 2/11 UDR and 8 UDR at Redford Cavalry Barracks, Edinburgh, on 4 April 1992. So the regiment only received colours in the last year it existed as a separate regiment.
- Later in 1992 it was absorbed when the UDR merged with the Royal Irish Rangers, and it became the 6th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment. That battalion has since gone too, so there is no direct successor unit today.
