7th (Robin Hood) Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, white metal cap badge

A King's crown white metal other ranks cap badge of the 7th (Robin Hood) Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). A crowned bugle horn within a circlet inscribed "The Robin Hoods", set on a Maltese cross bearing the honour "South Africa 1900-02", within a laurel wreath and surmounted by the King's crown. Die-struck, with both copper loop fittings to the reverse.

Nottingham's own battalion, named after the city's legendary outlaw, served in three wars. Its volunteers went to South Africa during the Boer War, earning the battle honour carried on this badge.

In the First World War the 1/7th landed in France in February 1915. On the first day of the Somme, 1 July 1916, it attacked the Gommecourt salient, where only 34 men reached the German front line. Its second line battalion, the 2/7th, fought at Passchendaele and Cambrai.

In the Second World War the Robin Hoods served in an anti-aircraft searchlight role, still wearing this badge. They served in north-west Europe from June 1944 until the war ended in May 1945.

A good, honest example of a badge from a unit with service in the Boer War and both world wars.
