WW1 Army Veterinary Service large 26mm brass button by Stephen Simpson. Stephen Simpson was a gold thread and military lace firm in Preston, Lancashire, not a specialist button maker.
Who they were.
Buttons with their name
- They were really a uniform supplier, so buttons carrying their name were most likely made for them by a button factory and sold under the Simpson name, as tailors and outfitters often did. I haven't found a source confirming who struck them, so treat that as likely rather than proven.
- Simpson-marked buttons are known on other uniforms. The National Maritime Museum holds a Merchant Navy button marked Stephen Simpson, and dealers have recorded a Royal Navy officer's embroidered cap badge with a Stephen Simpson, Preston paper maker's tag.
