Perhaps most dramatic battle fought in the Victorian era was at the Battle of Inkerman in 1854, both colour bearers fell in the fighting — but Colour Sergeant John Brophey rescued the Queen’s Colour in the heat of battle and continued to wave it and cheer the regiment on until he was wounded in the thigh. At the subsequent assault on Sevastopol, the Commanding Officer and both Ensigns carrying the colours were killed or mortally wounded, yet the regiment pressed on — losing three officers and thirteen men killed, with seven officers, nine sergeants and seventy-four men wounded.
Their battle honours included Egmont-op-Zee, Martinique 1809, Guadeloupe 1810, Alma, Inkerman, Sevastopol, and Afghanistan 1879–80.
In 1881 under the Childers Reforms, the regiment amalgamated with the 96th Regiment of Foot to form the Manchester Regiment.
