Commando was an infantry training battalion of the South African Army Infantry Formation. Unusual to find one still retaining its original backing plate. 
Overview
  • Role: Infantry training battalion for the South African Defence Force (SADF).
  • Formation: Established around November 1973 in Kimberley.
  • Staff: Formed largely using staff transferred from the Danie Theron Combat School recruit wing.
  • Recruits: Consisted mainly of area-bound farmers, business owners, and essential service workers who returned to regional commandos after training.
  • Legacy: After 11 Commando closed, the Intelligence School took over the facility and kept using the unit's insignia.
