Sunderland Police button.

The maker of this button dates it to between 1924-48

• 24mm, white metal (nickel/chrome-plated), standard large “greatcoat button” size for a police tunic

• Central device: the Sunderland borough arms on a shield, a ship’s anchor/nautical motif typical of the crest, encircled by “SUNDERLAND POLICE”

The maker mark is  Briggs, Jones and Gibson , Manchester, . This firm made military and civilian uniforms , and in 1924 the company was restructured as Briggs, Jones and Gibson (1924)  Limited. The Science Museum Group’s maker records confirm they were active 1924 to around 1948 as a manufacturer of buttons, based in Manchester . So the “1924” stamped into the back isn’t a date code, it’s baked into the company’s actual name after the restructure, which is why it sits right in the maker’s mark itself.
