A rare white metal shoulder title of the 7th Territorial Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, worn circa 1908 to 1921, retaining all three original rear loops. Headquartered at Princes Street, Stirling, the battalion mobilised in August 1914 and landed in France on 16 December 1914. In January 1915 it joined the regulars of the 10th Brigade, 4th Division, and fought through the Second Battle of Ypres, where the Germans first used poison gas. Losses were so severe that by late May 1915 only 5 officers and 84 men remained. The battalion rejoined the 51st (Highland) Division in March 1916, served on the Western Front for the rest of the war, and ended it north of Cambrai. Among its men was John Crawford Buchan, awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions in March 1918.
