Territorial Royal Engineers Northumbrian brass shoulder title in great condition, still retaining its original 3 rear loop fixings.

This title relates to the Royal Engineer companies raised for the Northumbrian Territorial Force division. The core unit was the 1st Newcastle Engineer Volunteers, later Northumbrian Divisional Engineers, a Royal Engineer unit of Britain’s Volunteer Force and Territorial Army founded in 1860 . Under the 1908 Haldane reforms that created the Territorial Force, the original plan was for the 1st Newcastle RE to provide the 2nd Northumbrian Field Company in the Northumbrian Division, with the rest forming the Northumberland (Fortress) RE , though by 1910 the plan changed so the 1st Newcastle RE provided the whole of the divisional RE, with its CO becoming Commanding Royal Engineer .

On mobilisation in 1914 the division fielded the 1st and 2nd (Newcastle) Northumbrian Field Companies plus a Northumbrian Divisional Telegraph Company (redesignated a Signal Company from 1911) . The division’s engineers went on to serve at the Battle of Rosières and the assault crossing of the River Selle in 1918 . The division itself reformed postwar, with 50th (Northumbrian) Divisional Engineers, RE reforming in April 1920 in the newly termed Territorial Army .
