World War I lapel or mufti badge for the Birmingham Battalion (also known as the Birmingham Pals), specifically referencing the 1914 Kitchener’s Army recruitment. It features a white enamel disc with a red and gold crowned “G R” cipher above “BIRMINGHAM BATTALION 1914,”
The badge was issued to civilian volunteers of the Birmingham Pals battalions—14th, 15th, and 16th (1st, 2nd, 3rd Birmingham) Royal Warwickshire Regiment—before uniforms arrived, allowing them to show service and avoid white feathers from women. Raised in September 1914 by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, these “Pals” battalions served in France from late 1915.
