1915 Brownlee & Co Ltd Scottish timber merchants on war service badge
A good original First World War period 'Brownlee & Company Limited On Government Work 1915' war workers brass badge; the reverse impressed with registration, for the year 1915. Good condition, complete with unusual buttonhole fitting, minor service wear.
Height approx 29mm.
'Brownlee & Company Limited' City Saw Mills, Post Dundas, Glasgow, Scotland.
These badges were issued by government and private firms from December 1914 to show the wearer was doing essential war work. Then on 26 August 1915 the Ministry of Munitions published rules banning private war work badges. So a private firm badge dated 1915, came from a short window of only a few months.
Company history
- James Brownlee, born 1813, was a millwright from Carluke. He founded his sawmill in 1849 on the Craighall Turnpike Road in Port Dundas and called it the City Saw Mills. His cousin, a Quebec merchant, shipped Canadian timber to the Clyde for the mills.
- In 1870 it expanded onto 14 acres on the east side of Craighall Road. It became the largest timber merchant in Scotland, and its shipments were a major part of the Forth and Clyde Canal trade.
- It became a limited company on 23 March 1896, taking in the City Saw Mills plus sites at Grangemouth and Kilmarnock, with £200,000 share capital.
- The former office building at 124 Craighall Road is now a listed building.
