 The 61st Battalion (Winnipeg), CEF was authorized on 20 April 1915 and embarked for Great Britain on 5 April 1915, providing reinforcements to the Canadian Corps until 6 July 1916, when its personnel were absorbed by the 11th Reserve Battalion, CEF; it was disbanded on 17 July 1917.

It recruited and mobilized in Winnipeg with a strength of 37 officers and 1,096 other ranks, sailing from Halifax on the troop ship Olympic and disembarking in the UK on 11 April 1915.

The battalion was raised by the 90th Winnipeg Rifles and 106th Winnipeg Light Infantry.

Its lineage is perpetuated today by the Royal Winnipeg Rifles.
