William Lee, Royal Field Artillery
This is a First World War trio to 1922 Gunner William Lee of the Royal Field Artillery, a Territorial soldier. All three medals are in original condition on their original ribbons.
The 1915 Star is named to 1922 Gnr W. Lee R.F.A. The British War Medal and Victory Medal are named to him as a Bombardier, Royal Artillery. This difference is normal. The Star was named first, from the 1915 roll, while the pair was issued later and named "R.A.", as was standard for artillerymen.
His medal index card confirms the trio. It shows his rank as Gunner, later Acting Bombardier, and his two numbers: 1922, and 695139 from the 1917 renumbering of the Territorial Force. The medal rolls are marked TF, confirming he was a Territorial rather than a regular soldier. His low four-digit number points to an early Territorial enlistment.
The card shows he first served in Egypt, arriving on 4 June 1915. This date matches the landing at Alexandria of the 1/2nd East Lancashire Brigade RFA, the Manchester Artillery, part of the 42nd (East Lancashire) Division. That division went on to serve at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. The card's remarks section is blank, suggesting he survived the war.
The group comes with his name disc, engraved "Lee, 13 Bootle St", an address in central Manchester. It also includes a silver framed photograph, hallmarked 1913, showing him in tropical khaki and a pith helmet, consistent with his service in Egypt.
The medals, card, disc and photograph all tie together to the same man, making this an attractive and well-documented group.
