“CHESHIRE CORPS OF AIR RAID WARDENS”
Between 1939 and 1945, Air Raid Wardens in Cheshire undertook a wide range of civil-defence duties:
• Enforcing blackouts and extinguishing lights visible from the air
• Guiding residents to public shelters during raids
• Reporting bomb damage, casualties, and unexploded ordnance
• Coordinating with the Fire Guard and Rescue Services
• Providing reassurance to civilians — especially during the heavy attacks on nearby Liverpool and Merseyside
Although Cheshire was not among the most bombed counties, its wardens were vital. Many raids intended for Liverpool or industrial targets along the Mersey overshot or dispersed, and rural communities often dealt with crash landings, stray bombs, and the logistical challenges of mass evacuation from urban areas.
