During WWII, knitting and other home-based “comforts work” was widely recognized as a patriotic contribution. Civilians (especially women) knitted socks, sweaters, scarves, hats etc. for sailors, soldiers, airmen. This not only helped morale and comfort, but also supplemented shortages of manufactured garments.
