Vehicle depicted – M3 75 mm Gun Motor Carriage tank destroyer
The half-track on this Tank Destroyer branch collar disc represents the U.S. M3 75 mm Gun Motor Carriage (M3 GMC), an early-war tank destroyer built by mounting a 75 mm M1897A4 gun – the U.S. version of the famous French “75” – on the chassis of the M3 White half-track. Designed in 1940–41, the M3 GMC combined a 147 hp White 160AX 6-cylinder petrol engine with a five-man crew and light armor (6–16 mm), giving a road speed of around 45–47 mph and a combat load of 59 rounds for the main gun. Around 2,200 were produced and issued to U.S. Tank Destroyer battalions, seeing front-line service as a self-propelled anti-tank gun in the Philippines, North Africa, Sicily and early Italian campaigns, and later in the Pacific where its 75 mm gun remained effective against lighter Japanese armor.
